WPO announces two new members during Board Meeting in Brazil
During the 2nd Board Meeting of 2017, in November, in Brazil, WPO (World Packaging Organization – www.worldpackaging.org) accepted two packaging associations as its new members. From Austria, the new member is Pack-Force - The Austrian Packaging Forum and from Saudi Arabia, RPI - Riyadh Polytechnic Institute. According to Pack-Force Director, Johannes Bergmair, “Pack-Force is not new in Austria. It is a long-time – since 2005 - established discussion group of Austria's packaging industry, formed by 20 companies and related entities, like Pack Experts and WPO.” As an Association, Pack-Force was established in June 2017.
Brazil is ready to receive WPO Board meeting and WorldStar judging
From November 06 to 10, Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, will host the 2nd WPO (World Packaging Organization – www.worldpackaging.org) Board Meeting of 2017. The week’s program, organized by local member ABRE (Brazilian Packaging Association – www.abre.org.br), will include WorldStar judging, the most recognized packaging award in the globe.
Asia receives two packaging training programs from WPO
During September, WPO accomplished two packaging training programs in Asia, one in Vietnam and the other in China. According to Pierre Pienaar, Vice President Education WPO and responsible for the programs, “the experience being involved in this five days residential training program (RTP) in Packaging Technology in the province of Tra Vinh, Vietnam, was a complete success”. 34 students from the industry attended the program in the facilities of Tra Vinh University. This initiative was led by the WPO President, Thomas Schneider, during a meeting with Mylan Group founder and CEO, My T Nguyen.
What a great year WPO is having!
Our meetings in Düsseldorf, during Interpack, were very successful and well-attended. Our working groups had lively and forward thinking meetings, with lots of participation. And we had a successful election of a new WPO President. (Congratulations to Pierre Pienaar who will take over on January 1, 2018.)
WPO accomplishes new packaging training programs in Africa
After three years, WPO (www.worldpackaging.org) was back in Lagos, Nigeria, supporting a training program in Packaging Technology given by Pierre Pienaar, WPO Vice President Education and member of AIP (Australian Institute of Packaging), a WPO member. It was a 3 days residential training program (RTP) in Food and Beverage Packaging Technology. Students were predominantly from Nigeria and more than ever before it was evident that there is a need, as well as a desire for some, to learn more in the science and technology of packaging. Besides Pierre Pienaar, Kishan Singh, from South Africa, also conducted the program. Ahmed Omah, from Nigeria Packaging Institute, another active WPO member, hosted the event.
World Packaging Awards 2018 are now open for entry
WPO announced that the entries for WorldStar Packaging Awards are now open and the closing date is 6 October, 2017. “We encourage every WPO member in the world to help us promote the largest and most important global packaging award”, alerts Thomas Schneider, President of WPO.
WPO Lifetime Achievement in Packaging Award 2018
The World Packaging Organisation (WPO) is pleased to announce the launch of the second edition of its Lifetime Achievement in Packaging Award. This initiative was established with the aim of acknowledging and rewarding excellence in all aspects of packaging science, technology, design and application across every country around the world. WPO honoured 4 highly qualified recipients last May during the WorldStar Awards ceremony in Düsseldorf at Interpack.

WPO announces winners of 2017 WorldStar Packaging Awards during Interpack
Over 400 people attended the WorldStar Awards Presentations & Gala Dinner, on May 4th, the most important global packaging competition in the world, organized by WPO (World Packaging Organization – www.worldpackaging.org). During the occasion, 140 winners were awarded from a total of 291 entries from 35 countries. Japan was the biggest winner of the night with a total of 20 trophies, followed by Germany with 18 awards. The ceremony was accomplished in the same week (May 4 - 6) of the WPO 98th Board Meeting, the first meeting of 2017, during Interpack, the major global packaging show, organized by Messe Düsseldorf, in Germany.
Residential Training Programme, February 2017
52 delegates attended the week long residential packaging technology training course in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The aim of the training was to equip participants with greater in-depth knowledge in order for them to tackle the challenges facing the packaging industry in their current environment and to prepare them for the competitive advantages emerging in the Association of Southeast Asian Nation's (ASEAN) Economic Community Market.
WPO renews sponsorship for WorldStar Awards ceremony with PMMI
For the third consecutive edition, PMMI (The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies) confirmed the sponsorship for the WorldStar Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner, to be held on May 4th, in Düsseldorf (Germany). The Award, considered the most prestigious one globally, is organized by WPO (World Packaging Organization). On the occasion, PMMI will promote its major packaging show in 2017, PACKEXPO Las Vegas and Healthcare Packaging Expo, to be held on September 25-27.
WorldStar Awards judging took place in Vienna
WPO met in Vienna on 17 November and selected winners of the WorldStar Awards. 291 entries were judged to 21 WPO members from around the world. Results have been announced.

Our friend and colleague Annabelle Tan
Our friend and colleague Annabelle Tan, of Singapore, passed away on Saturday evening, June 25, 2016, at 10:55 PM, Singapore time. Cause of death has not been made known to us but it was medical in nature. Annabelle was a good friend to all of us and to WPO.(more)

WPO Board joins in Budapest for the first meeting of 2016
WPO (World Packaging Organisation) will be holding its first meeting of 2016 between 22-26 May in Budapest (Hungary). WPO’s Hungarian member, the Hungarian Association of Packaging and Materials Handling (”CSAOSZ”), will host the event. All WPO meetings - Board and work committees will take place during the first four days of the five days program. The fifth day of the event will be open for the professional community. CSAOSZ is organizing a one day packaging conference, with international participation, as well as the Gala dinner for the WorldStar Award ceremony. The conference will be held under the title “Packaging innovations for sustainability and safety”.
Honorary Professorship Conferred on Pierre Pienaar from the Australian Institute of Packaging
Pierre Pienaar, the Director of Education of the Australian Institute of Packaging(AIP), and vice President of the World Packaging Organisation(WPO) responsible for education, was conferred upon by Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication, a leading university in Beijing, an Honorary Professorship on 18th April 2016.(more)
Prevention and reduction of food losses and food waste via appropriate packaging
WPO publishes a position paper to launch its ‘Packaging that saves food initiative’. Under the Chairmanship of Dr Johannes Bergmair, this new initiative aims to address the serious global issue of food wastage through improved and innovative packaging solutions.

WPO selects winners of WorldStar Awards 2016 in Mumbai, India
The judging session took place over 2 days in October, 2015 as part of the 95th WPO Board Meeting activities. 17 late entries were judged on line by the same panel of judges during November. Representatives from 19 packaging associations, members of WPO (World Packaging Organisation), judged 293 packaging projects, from 35 countries that entered the WorldStar Awards 2016. The judging sessions took place on 8th and 10th October during WPO’s Board Meeting program, held in Mumbai, India.
Budapest, Hungary – May 2016
The 1st WPO meeting of 2016 will take place between 22nd and 26th May in the beautiful city of Budapest in one of Central Europe’s oldest countries Hungary. Miklos Nagy and his colleagues from the Hungarian Association of Packaging and Materials Handling have put together an exciting and busy programme of technical meetings and discussions, culminating in the presentation of the 2016 WorldStar Awards. Delegates will also be able to explore this historic city whether it be walking across the Chain Bridge which spans the legendary Danube river, or taking coffee at the world famous Gerbeaud cafe followed by a visit to Margaret Island, this will be one WPO meeting that will stick long in your memory.
World Packaging Congress annual events in Colombo
The Sri Lanka Institute of Packaging and its subsidiary unit, the Packaging Development Centre are hosting this year's World Packaging Organization annual events in Colombo that include the board meeting, committee meetings, judging of World Star competition for excellence in Packaging, an international Packaging Congress and post congress tours from November 17 to 23, 2014.
WPO Position on Waste and Recycling
The World Packaging Organisation believes that packaging should be designed to fit its original purpose, while taking all expected recovery methods into perspective. This has to be done to fit into existing or planned waste management schemes. The world is heading towards a recycling society and the packaging community together with all players in the delivery chain must act accordingly. Packaging is part of the solution to achieve tomorrow’s sustainable society.
2014 WorldStar Student Awards

Award Ceremony: due to the extension of entry period to November 2014, the organizers will evaluate the convenience of the Award Ceremony - to be confirmed with the entrants.
The award ceremony will take place in São Paulo, Brazil, on 8th October, during the Brazilian Packaging Congress, an international event that focuses on the trends in the packaging industry.
2014 WorldStar Awards
The 2014 WorldStar Awards were judged in Barcelona earlier this month by 25 judges from all over the world. Out of the 249 entries received from 35 countries, there were 139 winners. Congratulations to all! Winners list by country.

Packaging Education in Africa
Lagos, Nigeria. The destination conjures up a variety of imaginations. I grew up in South Africa but nothing could have prepared me for the highly populated, super-resourced, bustling West African nation. A quarter of Africa's population lives in Nigeria. It is the 7th most populous country (an estimated 200 million people) in the world with 42% of its population 0-14 years of age. It is the world's 8th largest exporter of petroleum. It is a country of huge extremes and I feel privileged to have been asked to participate recently in a five day residential training program (RTP) focusing on Packaging Technology education.(more)
WPO Board Meeting in Barcelona, Spain
From November 04 to 08, WPO will have its second Board Meeting of 2013 in Barcelona, Spain. The whole program is being hosted by Graphispack Association, the local WPO member. During the week, WorldStar Package Competition entries will be judged.
2014 WorldStar Industry Awards
The WorldStar Industry Competition is one of the major events of the World Packaging Organisation. It is the pre-eminent international award in packaging and illustrates the continual advancement of the state of packaging design and technology and creates a living standard of international packaging excellence from which others may learn. 2013 WorldStar Student Awards
The WPO WorldStar Student Awards is an international packaging design competition for students from countries around the world to develop projects in the field of packaging design. 2013 WorldStar Award Ceremony
The 2013 WorldStar Award Ceremony took place in Sydney on May 9th gathering more than 200 participants from over 20 countries. As a co-organization from WPO and AIP, the ceremony enchanted all participants and highlited the excellence of packaging around the world. The 2013 edition of the WorldStar receive 316 entries from 32 countries from around the world.
90th WPO Board Meeting
The 90th WPO Board Meeting took place on May 8th in Sydney Australia alongside the Auspack Plus 2013 trade show, gathering board members from Austria, Australia, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Korea, Nigeria, Norway, Singapore, Spain, South Africa, Turkey, UK, USA.

WorldStar judging 2013 shows the best-of-the-best in packaging
Delegates from all over the world gathered in Singapore for the World Packaging Organization meetings and WorldStar Judging. Judging has just finished for the WorldStar Awards 2013, the most important packaging awards competition in the world, organised by WPO (World Packaging Organisation). Once more the process identified the best-of-the-best in the world of packaging. 25 judges from all over the world comprised the jury and they came together as part of the World Packaging Organization’s series of meetings in Singapore between 24 and 27 November. Judges represented WPO board members, bodies from national, regional and other packaging organizations.
